Mazurian University in Olecko ( Wszechnica Mazurska w Olecku ) is the oldest private non-profit university in Poland.

MU was established in May 1992 by Professor Joseph Krajewski following the educational reforms initiated by President Lech Walesa's post-communist government.

Upon his return to Poland from America , Professor Krajewski felt despondent regarding the educational levels of his fellow countrymen in northeast Poland . At that time only 2% of the population in the Mazurian Lake District possessed a college degree and of the approximate 9,000 teachers in the region's school system only 2,000 were university trained.

Professor Krajewski reasoned that if his homeland was to proceed into the 21 st century as a leader in Europe - Poland would have to better educate its people and thus the Mazurian University was born.

Since its inception, Mazurian University has provided higher educational opportunities to over 4,500 teachers – graduating with a BA degree in Pedagogy and 98% have continued their studies and earned their MA degrees thus assuring a sound educational foundation for Poland 's youth.

Professor Krajewski did not stop with educating grade school and high school teachers. Realizing the pressing needs for other areas of academic preparation, in order to give as many people as possible the tools necessary to take an active part in the new roles of a free market economy, he instituted other courses of study.

In the last 13 years Mazurian University has developed dynamically, adding several new Departments to further satisfy the educational needs of Poland 's citizenry:

•  1994 - Department of Law and Economics was initiated to prepare students to enter the ‘new-business-world' of a free economy. In 2001 Mazurian University was granted the right of conferring the title Masters of Arts.

•  1997 - Department of Philology was established to address the shortage of much needed teachers of English and German throughout Poland . The success of the undergraduate program ( 677 graduates) led to the establishment of the Masters of Arts program, which will have its first graduating class of 210 students this year (2005).

•  1997 - Department of Environmental Studies was commenced for the purpose of training a cadre of environmentalists to safeguard the precious natural resources of the Mazurian Lake District as well as throughout Poland and Europe . In 2001 the Department of Environmental Studies was granted permission to bestow the Masters of Science degree.

•  1998 - Department of Administration began functioning in order to assure Poland a core of Public Administrators possessing the managerial skills necessary to enter the dynamics of the 21 st Century.

There are currently approximately 2,200 students furthering their educational careers tutored by an international faculty of 154 PhDs and 103 MAs.

Throughout its relatively short history, Mazurian University has educated 8050 graduates - who in turn will guarantee a better future not only for themselves and their families but for Poland , Europe and the world as well.

According to the latest report from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, Mazurian University in Olecko straddles the borders of the second and third poorest regions in Europe (Poland unfortunately claims the top five poorest regions throughout Europe). This unfortunate distinction is Professor Krajewski's major driving force and it is his firm belief this will only be changed through a better educated populace.

If there is an advantage to be found in the poverty of the area it is in the fact that the northeast region of Poland lacks any heavy industry and its corresponding pollution, thus in turn giving the region an exceptionally clean and healthy environment.

Mazurian University is located on the picturesque shore of Lake Wielkie in Olecko (population 17,000) a quaint historic town that can trace its roots back to 1560 AD.

Olecko is surrounded by hundreds of pristine lakes situated in Europe 's only primeval forest (home to elk, deer, wild boars and European bison).

Our campus currently occupies 1.5 acres and consists of 5 buildings which include class rooms, lecture halls (seating capacity 510), library, sciences and language labs, dormitories, and administrative offices.

Mazurian University shares a very close working relationship with the local 150-bed newly renovated hospital for 'hands-on' practical courses.

Our goals are ever growing ...
